It is with great sadness that I relay the announcement of the passing of Turiya Alice Coltrane this past Friday, January 12, 2007 at the age of 69.

There are very few titans of jazz left, and now one more is gone. My sympathy is extended to Ravi, Oranyan, Michelle, Ms. Marilyn McLeod and the whole family as well as her extended family at the Ashram. What little contact I had with her showed her to be exactly what she preached - soft-spoken, kind, and generous.

There is no note of it on the official Alice Coltrane website, but presumably there will be.

My condolences are also extended to the family of Michael Brecker, who passed away this weekend as well. Another giant gone way too soon.
